The Tinley Park-Frankfort Rotary Club welcomed a German exchange student to its meeting on Aug. 27.
Sixteen-year-old Angelo Dalchow arrived in the United States two weeks ago and is staying with a host family in Mokena while attending classes at Lincoln-Way East High School.
“I love it here,” said Angelo, who comes to Illinois from a small town near Berlin.
The Orland Park Rotary Club is sponsoring Angelo’s year-long visit, exposing him to American cultures and traditions. The goal is to help bring the world closer together by learning about one another’s country, culture and ideas.
“It’s been a great experience for my wife, my kids and myself,” said Orland Park Rotarian Gerald Stoiber, who has opened his Mokena home to a number of exchange students through the years, including Angelo.
“They’re exactly the same as our kids,” he said.
Each year, more than 7,000 youths travel to foreign lands through the Rotary Youth Exchange. Some stay for a few weeks. Others, such as Angelo, stay an entire year.
Adjusting to a new country can be challenging.
Angelo, who is accustomed to attending school with 600 other students, had to adjust to one that enrolls over 2,300 students.
“I thought my school was big,” he said with a chuckle.
More students mean more square footage to navigate between passing periods.
“It’s complicated,” he said of Lincoln-Way East’s maze of classrooms, “but I have a system.”
